In this article we would explain some important characteristics of public organization.  Public sector organization is set up for many reasons like achieving a balanced growth, employment opportunities, filling the gap, provision of public utility, execution of hug projects.

Some important Characteristics of public organization include, state ownership & control, public welfare to the community, maximum welfare or satisfaction of the society, public accountability, financial constraint etc.

1.   Ownership & Control of State:

Public sector organization is owned & controlled by the state. Most of the public sector organizations are either run by the public servants or through board of directors appointed by the state.

2.   Objectives of Public Sector organization:

There are number of objectives for which organization are set up. These objectives include achieving balance growth, filling the Gap, provision of public utilities.

3.   Public Accountability:

Another important characteristic of public sector organization is its public accountability. Public sector organization is run by the public money; therefore these organizations are accountable to public.

4.   Maximum Public Welfare:

Public sector organization tries to provide maximum welfare to the people. Welfare of the community is a main objective of many public sector organizations. The public sector organizations try to achieve this objectives with limited resources.

5.   Financial Constraints:

Another important characteristic of public sector organization is financial constraint or limited resources.  This an important challenge faced by the public sector organization to provide maximum satisfaction in limited resources.


6.   Political Objectives:

Some time public organizations are set up to achieve political objectives or political millage.  Thus public organization is not always a need based organization; sometime it is set up to attain the political gains. This trend is more visible in developing countries.

7.   Budget:

Budget is an important document for public sector organization and these organizations strictly follow the budget allocation. Budget is a public document is widely circulated. Budget also serves a cost control tools for the public sector organization.
